A few years ago I went on a search for a new Yamaha Custom-Z alto. I've posted this before but maybe I need to re-state it. But I am sufficiently blessed with some wonderful sopranos and altos and feel no need to pursue a Yamaha - and yes, I've owned them. I am not a Yamaha fan but realize some love their Yamahas and there probably are some good ones out there. I found one at a local store and gave it a toot. I recall recent raves here about the new 82Z Yamaha soprano. That the OP experienced it with a new Yamaha is a good thing, but I sure wouldn't count on that being the case with every new saxophone - or even SOME new saxophones. Same with all the rest of the saxophones out there. It is unusual, too, that a new Yamaha regardless of the model (62III, of which I have yet hear 82Z, or something else) will be at its best right out of the shipping carton without dealer set-up. I'd put mine up against any other alto, including my own MKVI. Each one I've played/owned had the same tonal characteristics even though each one played differently. The only brand/model that I've played in the past MANY years that sounded similar to one another are the Ref 54 altos. I'd caution readers and posters NOT to rate a brand by one or even six playing experiences.
